Day one of the Australian Open delivered a whirlwind of emotions, with stunning upsets and dominant performances setting the stage for an electrifying tournament! The first major of the year kicked off under the scorching Melbourne sun, with temperatures nearing a sweltering 30 degrees Celsius.
The spotlight shone brightly on Chinese qualifier Bai Zhuoxuan, who orchestrated a dramatic upset against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. This victory guarantees China at least one player in the second round.
The match between Bai and Pavlyuchenkova, a former world No. 11, was a nail-biter, with both players missing match points in a tense third-set tiebreak. But Bai, displaying incredible resilience, ultimately prevailed with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (12-10) after a grueling 2 hours and 43 minutes on Kia Arena. This marks Bai's second Grand Slam victory!
Next up for Bai is a match against none other than Aryna Sabalenka on the prestigious Rod Laver Arena. Bai, with a mix of excitement and nerves, acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying she's eager to play against the world's number one.
Sabalenka, in her own right, secured a comfortable victory against French wildcard Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah, winning 6-4, 6-1 in just 1 hour and 16 minutes. She showcased her power, hitting 23 winners as she aims for her fifth Grand Slam title.
Sabalenka admitted that playing against a young, left-handed opponent can be tricky, but she was pleased to close out the match in straight sets.
Also advancing to the second round were seventh-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini and Elina Svitolina, the Ukrainian 12th seed.
Unfortunately, wildcard Venus Williams's bid for a remarkable win at age 45 fell short after a tough three-set loss to Serbia's Olga Danilovic.
In the men's draw, China's Zhang Zhizhen put up a valiant fight but couldn't overcome the firepower of 18th seed Francisco Cerundolo. Cerundolo, the highest-ranked player from South America, dominated with 38 winners, securing a 6-3, 7-6 (0), 6-3 victory.
Cerundolo expressed his satisfaction with his performance, calling it a great start to the year. This marks the second consecutive year that Zhang failed to win a match at the Australian Open.
In the night session, Carlos Alcaraz cruised past Australia's Adam Walton with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-2 in 2 hours and 5 minutes. Alcaraz is aiming to win the only Grand Slam title that has eluded him, as he has never progressed past the quarterfinals in Melbourne.
Alexander Zverev, the third seed, had a shaky start but managed to defeat Gabriel Diallo 6-7 (1), 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in 2 hours and 43 minutes. Zverev, last year's beaten finalist, recovered with strong serving and powerful groundstrokes.
But here's where it gets interesting... Day two promises more thrilling action, with women's No. 2 Iga Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, facing Chinese qualifier Yuan Yue. Also, No. 3 seed Coco Gauff and 10-time men's champion Novak Djokovic will begin their campaigns. Bu Yunchaokete and Shang Juncheng are the other Chinese players to watch out for.
