The sun and sand are a soothing balm for the soul, but for some, the desire to bring along a giant shade canopy, complete with indoor couch and a table set for a fancy meal, can lead to legal trouble. As my colleague Hannah Fry reported, two iconic Orange County beach cities are cracking down on large shade structures, citing safety concerns and the potential to impede emergency response efforts.
In Laguna Beach, the use of shade structures larger than a standard beach umbrella is now banned, with the exception of designated areas at Aliso Beach and Main Beach. Violators face a fine of up to $500. Newport Beach has taken a similar stance, outlawing canopies larger than 6 feet by 6 feet and prohibiting the linking of multiple shade structures. The city also restricts the use of canopies to 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., earlier than the summer sunset.
These restrictions have sparked debate among beachgoers. Some lament the policies as too restrictive, especially for families with small children who require more shade than a small umbrella can provide. Others, like myself, prefer a more minimalist approach to beach setups, favoring a small chair and blanket over elaborate structures.
The trend of bringing large shade structures to the beach has been fueled by heightened concerns about the health effects of sun exposure. However, it's important to balance the need for shade with the safety and convenience of other beachgoers. While a small umbrella or cabana might be sufficient for many, others may require more extensive setups.
The debate over beach canopies highlights the complex interplay between personal comfort, safety, and the needs of the community. As beach cities continue to grapple with these issues, finding a balance that satisfies all stakeholders will be crucial.
