ByteDance's Response to Hollywood Backlash: Enhancing Seedance 2.0 Safeguards
ByteDance, the Chinese tech giant behind the controversial AI video model Seedance 2.0, has responded to the intense backlash from Hollywood. The company has announced plans to strengthen safeguards on its AI tool, addressing concerns over copyright theft and unauthorized use of intellectual property.
The backlash came from major Hollywood studios, including Netflix, Paramount Skydance, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Disney. These studios have been vocal about the unauthorized use of their copyrighted characters and celebrity likenesses in videos generated by Seedance 2.0.
In a statement, a ByteDance spokesperson acknowledged the concerns, stating, 'We respect intellectual property rights and have heard the concerns regarding Seedance 2.0.' The company is taking proactive measures to prevent the unauthorized use of intellectual property and likeness by users.
The controversy stems from viral videos showcasing copyrighted characters and celebrity likenesses, raising concerns about intellectual property rights. Hollywood groups, led by the Motion Picture Association (MPA), have issued stern warnings and demanded that ByteDance cease the infringing activity.
MPA chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin emphasized the scale of the issue, stating, 'In a single day, the Chinese AI service Seedance 2.0 has engaged in unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works on a massive scale.' He further criticized ByteDance for launching a service without adequate safeguards against infringement, disregarding established copyright laws.
Disney, in particular, has been proactive in protecting its intellectual property. They sent a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance, accusing the company of distributing and reproducing their intellectual property without permission. Disney has a history of taking legal action against AI companies for similar issues, as evidenced by their previous cease-and-desist letter to Character.AI in September.
Despite the legal battles, Disney has also shown support for AI innovation by signing a licensing deal with OpenAI, allowing the AI company to use Disney characters in its video generator, Sora. This dual approach of protecting intellectual property and embracing AI technology highlights the complex relationship between Hollywood and AI development.
As ByteDance works to enhance Seedance 2.0's safeguards, the industry awaits further developments in this ongoing debate, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that fosters innovation while respecting intellectual property rights.
