Residents in a Monterey neighborhood are feeling quite exasperated as Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has announced that the restoration of power will not occur until December 29. This delay is significantly impacting their holiday festivities. "Oh God. Not again," exclaimed Joanne White, reflecting the disappointment felt by many upon receiving this news from PG&E.
Bonnie Thompson, who was visiting her mother during the holiday season, shared her frustrations: "It’s just been like a sad Christmas because everything feels different. There are no Christmas lights, we can't take showers, and our phones are dead." Similarly, White added, "I miss my TV, my garbage disposal, and my heat."
In contrast, Flaherty's Seafood Grill in nearby Carmel managed to reopen its doors on Saturday after being forced to close due to the power outages. Ken Spilfogel, the restaurant owner, expressed his relief at having customers back in the dining room and praised his team for their resilience during these tough days. "My crew was amazing. We even directed some of our reservations to a few other restaurants that were still open," he stated.
During the outages, only about five restaurants in Carmel remained operational. Edwin's, another local eatery, utilized generators to keep its services running. Owner Jakub Kacprzynski remarked, "We always aim to support the businesses around us. We want to ensure that not just we’re operational, but that others can continue to serve their customers as well. So, we assisted a few businesses with our generators."
Meanwhile, in the affected Monterey neighborhood, residents anxiously await the return of their electricity, hoping it happens sooner rather than later. One resident voiced their frustration, saying, "It seems like PG&E is accustomed to these outages. Pebble Beach always experiences blackouts, and so does Skyline Forest. It’s almost as if they’ve resigned themselves to the situation without complaints. However, it’s becoming increasingly ridiculous how frequently this occurs. We believe they should be taking steps to improve the reliability of their service."
The ongoing situation serves as a reminder of the challenges many communities face when utility companies struggle to provide consistent service, especially during critical times like the holiday season.
