Norwich's Unthank Road is set to undergo a major transformation, with roadworks expected to last for an extended period of three months. This ambitious project, valued at £300,000, aims to enhance safety and efficiency at the Unthank Road and Christchurch Road junction. The Norfolk County Council is taking proactive measures to address concerns regarding the high number of accidents at this location.
The primary focus of the project is the replacement and upgrade of the existing traffic lights, ensuring a smoother flow of traffic. Additionally, a new puffin crossing will be installed on Christchurch Road, providing a safer crossing point for pedestrians. To accommodate cyclists, filter lanes will be widened, promoting a more cyclist-friendly environment.
However, these improvements come with temporary disruptions. During the construction period, Christchurch Road will be closed on both sides of the junction, and Unthank Road will have temporary two-way traffic signals. The most significant challenge arises towards the end of the project, when the entire junction will need to be shut down for three days to facilitate resurfacing work.
The council emphasizes the necessity of these changes for the safety of both the public and their operatives during the construction phase. The decision to proceed with the project was influenced by a feasibility study conducted by local members of Town Close, Nelson, and Eaton, which recommended the upgrade to a puffin crossing. With a total of five personal injury collisions recorded at the location over three years, the council's response is timely and aimed at preventing further accidents.
While planning permission is not required, the council must provide notice of the proposals. Residents and stakeholders interested in sharing their opinions can do so by contacting the NPlaw office at Norfolk County Council, County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich, NR1 2DH, or via email at trafficorders@norfolk.gov.uk, ensuring their comments are marked for the attention of the traffic regulation order team and received by Tuesday, December 23.
