It featured a quirky Optimus robot serving popcorn and an adventurous menu that included items like the 'Epic Bacon'—a dish inspired by the carnivore diet. However, just as quickly as the hype crescendoed, it deflated; the diner swiftly slashed its menu options and limited operating hours, leading to frustration among customers and neighbors alike, especially those upset by the diner obstructing views from nearby apartment buildings.
Fast forward to a warm Friday afternoon in December, and the scene is starkly different. The parking lot designated for Tesla car charging is at most half filled, a clear indication of dwindling interest. Inside this so-called "retro-futuristic" diner, only a handful of visitors trickle in, opting for basic fare like burgers and hot dogs, or simply browsing merchandise. The upper deck, known as the "Skypad," sits empty apart from two employees who are busy hanging holiday lights. In fact, there are more workers cleaning and maintaining the diner than there are diners enjoying a meal—an irony not lost on those familiar with the initial fanfare surrounding its opening.
In essence, what’s left is a themed charging station that responds to a question few were asking: why do we need a Tesla-themed diner when Los Angeles is already saturated with diners and charging stations? The novelty has worn off, and many are growing weary of billionaire projects that seem disconnected from the needs and desires of everyday people.
