Beneath the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, a single honey fungus has been silently spreading through the roots of the forest for millennia. This organism, known as Armillaria ostoyae, is one of the strongest contenders for the largest living thing on Earth, but the question of its title is more contested than the headlines suggest. What makes this fungus truly remarkable is not just its size, but the fact that it is a single, interconnected organism that has been growing and expanding for thousands of years. This raises a deeper question: what counts as one organism at all?
The fungus was first spotted in the Malheur National Forest in 1988 by a Forest Service worker, Greg Whipple. At the time, it was estimated to cover about 400 acres, but further research revealed that this was a vast underestimate. Through genetic testing, researchers discovered that the entire organism is a single, genetically distinct individual, covering an area of nearly 10 square kilometers. This is not the only Armillaria in the forest, but this particular patch is notable for being all a single organism.
Underground, the fungus exists mainly as mycelium, a mat of fine threads called hyphae that spread through soil and wood. It also grows rhizomorphs, tougher root-like strands that allow it to travel from one tree root to the next. This is how it advances: root to root, tree to tree, fanning outward through the forest floor. It feeds by killing, attacking the roots and lower trunks of trees, and the dead and dying trees scattered across its territory are a map of where it has been and where it is working now. The autumn mushrooms, which are the only part built to be seen, are the fruiting bodies that release spores and give the honey fungus its name.
The age of the fungus is striking, and should be read as an estimate rather than a precise date. Nobody has counted rings or carbon-dated the whole organism, but by working backward from its current size and assuming a spread rate of between 20 centimeters and a meter a year, researchers have estimated its age to be between 1,900 and 8,650 years old. Even the low end makes it ancient, and the high end would place it among the oldest living things known. However, the spread rate is an average, and growth is not perfectly steady, so the range is genuinely uncertain rather than falsely precise.
The fungus is often called the largest living organism on Earth, but this is a contested title. By area, it may no longer be the leader, as a single seagrass clone in Shark Bay, off Western Australia, covers roughly 200 square kilometers. By mass, a quaking aspen clone in Utah called Pando, a stand of genetically identical trees sharing one root system, is often estimated at around 6,000 tonnes and is commonly described as the heaviest known organism. The Oregon fungus remains one of the largest single organisms by area and may rival the others by mass, but the exact ranking depends on definitions and estimates.
What is not in question is the existence of the fungus itself. Somewhere under the Malheur, one organism has been growing outward from a single point for at least 1,900 years, killing trees as it goes, surfacing for a few weeks each autumn, and otherwise keeping to the dark. The argument over its title is really an argument about words. The fungus does not depend on winning it. In my opinion, the true wonder of this fungus is not its size, but the fact that it is a single, interconnected organism that has been growing and expanding for thousands of years, silently shaping the forest around it. This raises a deeper question: what does it mean to be alive, and how do we define the boundaries of an organism?
