The demonstration, organized by the Canada First Movement, was led by founder and president Joe Anidjar, who aims to send a message across the country. Anidjar expressed concerns about the current immigration system, stating that it has shifted from a culture of hard work to one where taxpayers fund people's livelihoods. He advocates for redirecting funds towards homelessness and mental health support within the city rather than overseas conflicts.
One of the rally's attendees, Ron Bouwmeister, protested for his grandchildren, expressing a desire to see a more diverse population and a return to a Canada he believes is being lost. The rally attracted a total of 11 arrests, according to initial reports, but this number was later revised to 9 by Toronto police. The Canada First rally prompted a counter-protest by Community Solidarity Toronto, which focused on reducing hate in the city and garnered approximately 150 attendees. Dana Julien, a protester holding a sign that said 'Immigrants are welcome here,' emphasized the need to stand against hatred towards immigrants.
Councillors and activists held a news conference inside Toronto City Hall, warning of the dangers of anti-immigration rhetoric. Nigel Barriffe, president of the Urban Alliance on Race Relations, refuted the notion that immigrants are to blame for Canada's affordability crisis, emphasizing their contributions to building the country's society. Rev. Sarah Miller, a member of the Toronto East Anti Hate Mobilization, highlighted the impact of anti-immigration protests on creating an environment where racism thrives, reducing safety for everyone.
The event also sparked discussions about free expression and the role of law enforcement. Councillor Neethan Shan expressed solidarity with affected communities, emphasizing the need to stop xenophobia and anti-refugee sentiments that fuel further racism and hate. Anidjar, however, defended the movement's intentions, arguing that it aims to preserve Canada's culture, identity, and way of life, despite the controversy it has generated.
