The US military, in a statement on Saturday, confirmed the strikes were carried out alongside partner forces, though they did not specify who these forces were. This response, dubbed Operation Hawkeye Strike by the Trump administration, is a direct reaction to the Palmyra attacks, which claimed the lives of two members of the Iowa National Guard.
The strikes began on December 19th with a large-scale operation targeting 70 IS-related sites in central Syria, including infrastructure and weapons caches. The US has historically relied on the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces as its primary partner in the fight against ISIS in Syria. However, since the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Assad in 2024, Washington has increasingly coordinated with the central government in Damascus.
Syria's recent joining of the global coalition against ISIS adds a new layer of complexity to the situation. Meanwhile, in Aleppo, dozens of Kurdish fighters left the city on Sunday, according to security sources, as the Syrian army continues to clear out remaining pockets of resistance. The violence in Syria's second city highlights the deep fault lines within the country, where President Ahmed al-Sharaa's promise of unification faces resistance from Kurdish forces wary of his Islamist-led government.
